My First Bird Garden

I reminisce about the time when I began watching birds, it was just after I was out of high school. I first hung up my feeders on a pole with a lot of hooks because I was using many types of feeders. I filled the feeders and waited for the birds to come. First I had to find a way to prevent the squirrel(s) from eating all of the seeds, so I read about it. I read magazines, books, online, until I decided on the squirrel baffle which I wanted to purchase. I placed it about halfway up on the pole and it took care of the problem.
After that, the birds increased at the feeders little by little.

Soon after that, I was reading in Birds & Blooms about birds taking pleasure in gardens and getting natural foods from them. Plus things like shelters too. So I began planning on where I could put a shelter. I looked around the yard for the best area to plant my flowers. I had the feeders in the side yard a good area from the trees. I started with a bird bath within my budget in the back yard (in a walkway) and the yard was kind of small. I did not think that the front yard was a very good choice. So I finally decided on making a circle of flowers around the pole for the bird feeders!. The birds loved it when I was finished!

  1. Wow, I've never heard of squirrel baffle. I am guessing it keeps the squirrel's away. I think it's wonderful that you found a love of birds at such a young age. I have a bird feeder here-I get lots of Cardinal's around here.

    1. Hi Linda, thank you for your comment and for joining. You guessed correctly. If you do not keep them away they eat all of the bird seed. You can purchase the baffles or make them yourself. At my current residence I could not afford one so I made one out of a pie pan and it worked great!

This is an interesting post about your first bird garden, I will try feeding the local birds in my area and see how I get on.
